NEW GALLERY OPENING: SCORCHED | Sarah Myerscough Gallery

1 WHITE HART LANE, BARNES, LONDON, SW13 0PX
OPENS 10 JUNE 2019

Leading curator Sarah Myerscough is opening a new gallery this June. The gallery will debut with 'Scorched' a critically acclaimed exhibition of scorched wood-art by contemporary artists and designers.

The traditional process of shou-sugi-ban (yakisugi) is a technique originating in Japan in the 18th century which involves the slight charring of the surface of wood. Although it carries a strong cultural significance, this exhibition comes from a clear Western perspective.

Artists were asked to consider the process of scorching in their practice and how in turn that reflects upon the material. They include Alison Crowther, David Gates, Christopher Kurtz, Eleanor Lakelin, John Makepeace, Peter Marigold, Malcolm Martin & Gaynor Dowling, Gareth Neal, Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley, Wycliffe Stutchbury and Nic Webb.

First showcased in the spectacular Fitzrovia Chapel in Pearson Square for London Craft Week - Scorched will also tour later this year to Bangkok Craft Week and Hong Kong Craft Week.
