21 JUNE - 29 JULY 2024
This summer, Sarah Myerscough Gallery presents Eleanor Lakelin's second solo exhibition, titled Intimations. The show marks the evolution of a growing cast of experiments in Lakelin’s ongoing exploration of the vessel form. Born amidst the overgrowth of memory and matter, perennial themes of liminality, entropy, and classical order continue to underwrite the work’s otherworldly spirit. A deepening dialogue between machined form and the chaotic emergence of burr is staged between each piece. Together they animate a universal physics of inside and outside, or void and containment, synonymous with the rituals and symbolism historically poured in and out of one of civilisation’s oldest object forms.

The international artist-designer-makers included in this curated collection by turn embrace, problematise and re-conceptualise ideologies of sustainability and conscious sourcing to create beautifully crafted sculptural objects and wall-pieces in materials such as grasses, wood, jute, sisal, willow, and stoneware."

Artist in Wood, Eleanor Lakelin and Silversmith Adele Brereton live and work in Lewisham near Deptford Creek in South-East London. In their exhibition TIDELINES, they explore their mutual interest in the fragments of eroded objects and material they find on the Thames foreshore near their studios. As low tide reveals the layers of time, remnants of material connect us to the treasured objects, industries and lives of people who have shared this location for centuries. Both artists are interested in how fragments of the past can be used to create new narratives - how found textures and forms can be reinterpreted in wood and silver.

23 JUNE - 21 AUGUST 2021
"Antediluvian landscapes, lost worlds and buried cities. The opulent darkness of scorched growths, milky surfaces striated with sandy estuaries, flowing ripples of textured rustiness. Ostensibly abstract, Eleanor Lakelin’s vessel-shaped sculptures abound in metaphorical resonance. They speak to the hand and to the soul, conjuring sensory imaginings and visual narratives. They share an equal timelessness and sense of urgency."
- Dr. Melanie Vandenbrouck. Curator of Sculpture at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Broken Beauty explores the profound beauty of imperfection and vulnerability. In particular, the artists consider this question through their connection to the natural world, its resilience and fragility, while also acknowledging lost links between humanity and nature. By considering beauty as broken, the aesthetic vision, material content and innovative processes involved in these artworks highlight nature's imperfections; beauty is found through rich character, a knowingness and an honesty regarding the fallibility found in all living things.
